Pregnant and Abandoned

Robinah was a university student living with her family in Uganda. When finances became difficult, Robinah turned to a school friend for assistance paying her university tuition. This young man helped out but had ulterior motives and convinced Robinah to start a sexual relationship in exchange for his help. When Robinah became pregnant, this relationship soured and the young man refused to accept any responsibility for the baby.

“I was praying hard to have a family that would take me in, I was yelling for a home that would take me in with my baby, I was crying out to God every day”

When Robinah’s parents learned of the pregnancy, Robinah found herself pregnant and living on the street. Her education was over and she had to look for work. Finding only work in a bar, Robinah managed to make a little money. Unfortunately, work as a bar waitress in Uganda has other risks and Robinah quickly found herself being asked for more than she was willing to give patrons. The bar owner who had allowed Robinah to sleeping in the bar at night soon demanded sex in exchange for shelter and Robinah was again on the streets.

Robinah knew of some old buses parked near a large church where many street people slept. She decided this would be better than trading sex for shelter and began staying in a bus at night. During the day she would beg for food. Life was hard and she became very sick. Eventually, someone noticed this sick pregnant girl and contacted a social worker at the Remnant Generation. Staff located Robinah and offered her assistance. Robinah was reluctant to go with anyone at this point, but eventually realized she needed help and went.

Robinah started prenatal care and was given nutritious meals. Through love and counselling staff at Remnant Generation helped Robinah become healthy. While Robinah now had a way survive and have her baby, there was still no clear future for her and her family wanted nothing to do with her.

Terry and Andrew Banman, Arise staff on the ground in Uganda had been working with The Remnant Generation to help them launch their ministry. They both felt there was something special about Robinah and enquired about her. They were shocked to hear she had family but that even now they were unwilling to stand with Robinah and her baby. After some discussion and planning, the Banman’s took in Robinah and found funding for her university education.

Today, Robinah has several small businesses and works with The Remnant Generation to help other pregnant young girls at risk. Today, Robinah is thriving and has a bright future !!
