Abandoned at 13 with 3 Younger Siblings

The Arise Uganda team (Terry and Andrew Banman) worked in an urban slum located on the edge of Kampala. In this slum, Arise focused on helping in the worst families situations they found. The goal was always to see families reunited and children properly cared for.

“I did not know where she had gone or what to do”

Winnie was one of several cases where the children had been abandoned in this slum by their parents. Her father left the family and it was struggling to survive. Eventually, Winnie’s mother also left with the intention of finding work in her home village. With no knowledge of where her mother had gone, Winnie was left to care for her 3 siblings when she was just 13 years old.

With no parents and no work, Winnie was reduced to collecting and selling scrap. For food the kids relied on left-overs from kind neighbours. Thankfully COVID rules forbid they’re landlord from throwing them out of the room they were staying in.

After engaging with the Winnie and her siblings, Arise was able to trace the mother and convince her to return to the children. Arise worked to help mother start a small
