Education Is Discipleship
Education and discipleship are one & the same thing. You can’t disciple character without teaching facts, and you can’t teach facts without creating the framework that guides character. Teach any subject without mentioning God and you’ve also taught that God doesn’t apply to that subject. This develops a church with no clue how God applies to most of their waking hours.
The connection between education and discipleship is evident in the ministry of Jesus himself. He discipled 12 young men in 3 years using both formal education and everyday moments. With effective education (discipleship) our world would be turned upside down as Jesus’ students birthed a global church. And Jesus’ method followed God’s training. One of the first commands is passing all of God’s “statutes and commandments” to the next generation.
“And you shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up.”
~ Deuteronomy 6:7
Parents can never say “now I’m teaching” or “now I’m not”. Children are always learning and imitating. Children are often referred to as sponges for soaking up everything they hear. Parents must disciple children the way Jesus did, through their formal education and everyday activities. In this way, children will eventually understand who God is, his plan for the world, and their place in it.
